can I install ubuntu on a pre-existing partion on my windows box?

I think you can try but any way first make a full backup off all your hard drive then if something goes wrong you can install fresh windows and use that backup to restore your computer.

Yes you can. The installation process will let you overwrite an existing partition without affecting another one.
Just be careful you pick the correct one. It should be easy to distinguish between them by looking at their size.
