You don’t need to do anything to prep the hard disk to install Ubuntu, all of that is done by the installer. Just boot Ubuntu install disk, and when you get to the partitioning section, you will be given several options. You can 1) have it automatically resize an existing partition that you want to save and use the freed space to install, 2) have it automatically repartition and format the entire drive or 3) manually partition to create, delete, resize and format partitions as you see fit.
The Ubuntu Installer should help you achieve this. First you will be given the opportunity to automatically partition either an entire drive, or free space on a drive. This is also called “guided” partitioning. If you do not want to autopartition, choose Manually edit partition table from the menu. Heres a screenshot tutorial link below to help you out.
